π Advanced Selection & Masking
Build a luminosity mask
When you want to grade only the brightest (or darkest) tones.
- Ctrl/β-click the RGB channel thumbnail to load the highlights as a selection.
- To target darks instead, Select βΈ Inverse; to tighten, intersect (Ctrl/β+Shift+Alt-click) again.
- Add an adjustment layer β the luminosity selection becomes its mask.

Mask from the best channel
When a subject separates strongly in one color channel.
- In Channels, find the channel with the most subject/background contrast.
- Duplicate it, then push contrast hard with Curves or Levels to near black-and-white.
- Load it as a selection and use it as a mask.

Drop a tone with Blend-If
When you want to hide a bright sky or dark backdrop instantly.
- Double-click the layer to open Blending Options.
- Under Blend If, drag the This Layer white (or black) slider inward.
- Alt/β₯-drag to split the slider for a soft, halo-free transition.

Cut out fine hair cleanly
When Select Subject leaves a chopped or haloed hairline.
- Select βΈ Subject, then open Select and Mask.
- Run the Refine Edge Brush along the wispy edge only; nudge Shift Edge negative.
- Tick Decontaminate Colors, Output to New Layer with Layer Mask.

π¨ Color, Tone & Grade
Set up a safe color pipeline
When colors shift between apps, screens, or on export.
- Edit βΈ Color Settings: pick a working space (sRGB for web, Adobe RGB / ProPhoto for wide work).
- Work in 16-bit for grading headroom (Image βΈ Mode).
- Deliver with Convert to Profile, not Assign β Convert keeps the appearance.

Grade with a Gradient Map
When you want a cohesive, tone-mapped color look fast.
- Add a Gradient Map adjustment layer.
- Build a dark-to-light gradient: cool shadow color β warm highlight color.
- Drop the layer opacity (or set Soft Light) until it's believable.

Save & reuse a grade as a LUT
When you want one grade to travel across images (or into video).
- Build your grade with adjustment layers over a neutral base.
- File βΈ Export βΈ Color Lookup Tables to write a
.cube. - Apply anywhere with a Color Lookup adjustment layer.

Match two images' color
When a set must read as one shoot.
- Match tones first (brightness/contrast), then color.
- Drop a Color Sampler on a comparable point in each image.
- Add Curves to one and move each channel until its sampled values meet the reference.

Split-tone a photo
When you want cinematic cool shadows and warm highlights.
- Add a Color Balance layer.
- On Shadows push toward cyan/blue; on Highlights toward red/yellow.
- Keep Midtones near neutral so skin stays believable.

Soft-proof for print
When a grade must survive on paper, not just screen.
- View βΈ Proof Setup βΈ Custom: choose the printer profile, tick Simulate Paper Color.
- Toggle proof with Ctrl/β + Y; the image dulls β that's the paper.
- Turn on Gamut Warning (β§βY) and desaturate flagged areas.

π§βπ¨ High-End Retouching
Set up frequency separation
When you must even skin tone without erasing pores.
- Duplicate twice β Low (Gaussian Blur until pores vanish) and High.
- On High: Apply Image (source Low, Subtract, Scale 2, Offset 128), blend Linear Light.
- Even tone on Low; heal blemishes on High β never both at once.

Dodge & burn on a grey layer
When a portrait is clean but flat and needs form.
- New layer, mode Soft Light, tick Fill with 50% gray.
- Soft brush, Flow 5β10%: white to dodge highlights, black to burn recesses.
- Check in a temporary Black & White view; lower opacity to taste.

Whiten teeth naturally
When teeth read yellow or dull.
- Add a Hue/Saturation layer; on Yellows, drop saturation first.
- On Master, raise Lightness slightly. (Yellow out, then brighten.)
- Invert the mask to black and paint the effect onto the teeth only.

Make eyes pop (subtly)
When eyes need life without looking fake.
- Add a Curves layer, lift midtones; invert the mask and paint the iris and whites.
- Optionally add a High-Pass-sharpened layer masked to the iris.
- Never paint out the catchlight, and keep whites off-white.

Scale an element correctly
When a pasted person or object looks the wrong size.
- Find the scene's horizon by extending its receding edges to a vanishing point.
- Set the element's ground-contact point first.
- Scale so the horizon crosses it at the same body height as the scene's people.

Build a believable cast shadow
When a composited element casts none and looks pasted.
- Duplicate the element, fill black, set Multiply, move below it.
- Free Transform βΈ Distort/Skew onto the ground, running away from the light.
- Increase Gaussian Blur toward the far end and fade its opacity with distance; tint it slightly blue.

Anchor with a contact shadow
When an element still floats even with a cast shadow.
- New layer under the element, mode Multiply.
- Small soft black brush at low flow: darken exactly where the base meets the ground.
- Keep it tight and barely blurred β this is what reads as "touching".

Add depth with atmosphere
When background elements feel pasted forward.
- On far elements, lower contrast and lift the blacks slightly.
- Glaze a low-opacity haze in the sky/scene color over them.
- Keep the nearest element crispest and most saturated.

Unify a composite with one grade
When pieces look like separate photos side by side.
- Correct every element to neutral first.
- Put a single grade (Color Lookup, or Curves + Color Balance) at the top of the stack.
- It rains down on everything below, giving them one shared color.

π Design Systems & Type
Build a type scale & styles
When a layout's type sizes feel arbitrary.
- Pick a base size and a ratio (e.g. 16 Γ 1.25) β a modular scale; assign roles.
- Set one line per role correctly, then create a named Paragraph Style from it.
- Edit a style once and every instance updates.

Set a baseline grid & columns
When elements don't line up across a layout.
- View βΈ New Guide Layout: set columns, gutters, and margins.
- Add a baseline at your body leading so text snaps to a shared rhythm.
- Align every block to the grid β invisible structure, visible polish.

Make a reusable mockup
When you drop different art onto the same surface repeatedly.
- Put a rectangle where the art goes, Convert to Smart Object, and Warp it to the surface.
- Add the surface's shadows (Multiply) and highlights (Screen) above it, clipped.
- Swap art any time with Replace Contents β the treatment stays.

Spin one design into many sizes
When a campaign needs poster, square, story, and banner.
- Use Artboards (one per size); design the largest first.
- Place Linked the shared logo/art into each so one edit updates all.
- File βΈ Export βΈ Export As renders every artboard at once.

Harmonize a composite with generative fill
When a composite is cramped or has a distraction.
- Generative Expand (Crop out, empty prompt) for room; audit the new edges.
- Generative Fill with an empty prompt to erase a distraction.
- Grain/sharpen-match the generated area and hand-blend; keep it on its generative layer.

Batch a folder with a conditional
When mixed landscape/portrait files all need the same prep.
- Record an Action with relative steps (long-edge resize, sharpen, save).
- Panel menu βΈ Insert Conditional: if landscape play one crop, else another.
- File βΈ Automate βΈ Batch over the folder (tick Override Save As).

Mass-produce from a spreadsheet
When you need hundreds of graphics that differ only by data.
- Name layers to match CSV headers; Image βΈ Variables βΈ Define (Text / Pixel / Visibility).
- Data Sets βΈ Import the CSV and step through rows to proof.
- File βΈ Export βΈ Data Sets as Files to render every row.

Merge many frames into one
When one frame can't hold the width, range, or depth you need.
- Panorama: File βΈ Automate βΈ Photomerge (Auto + Blend + Content-Aware edges).
- HDR: File βΈ Automate βΈ Merge to HDR Pro (bracket, Remove Ghosts).
- Focus stack: Load into Stack β Auto-Align β Auto-Blend (Stack Images).

Export a looping GIF or MP4
When a design needs a few seconds of motion.
- Window βΈ Timeline βΈ Create Video Timeline; keyframe Position/Opacity (stopwatch).
- Match first and last frames for a seamless loop; add Ease.
- GIF: Save for Web (loop Forever). MP4: File βΈ Export βΈ Render Video (H.264).
