Module 1 โ€ข Lesson 1๐ŸŒ— Luminosity Masks: Select by Tone

In the intro, a mask was a grayscale stencil you painted by hand. A luminosity mask is a stencil the image paints for you, from its own brightness. It is the professional way to adjust highlights and shadows separately, and it is the foundation of natural landscape and portrait work.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ The Goal: Two Exposures, One Frame

A scene the camera cannot hold in one shot: expose for the sky and the land goes black; expose for the land and the sky blows out. Luminosity masks let you treat each tonal range on its own. On the right, the raw high-contrast capture; on the left, the balanced result. Drag the handle:

๐Ÿง  Mental Model: The Image Paints the Mask

Recall the intro's rule: on a mask, white reveals and black hides. A luminosity mask simply says: let the picture's own brightness be that black-and-white stencil. Load a Lights mask and the bright pixels become white (selected, editable) while the dark pixels become black (protected). The mask is literally a grayscale copy of the photo's luminance.

Two things make this powerful:

  • The edges are perfect. Because the mask follows the actual tones, its transitions are exactly as soft as the light in the scene. No haloes, no hand-feathering.
  • It is self-targeting. You never have to paint around the sky to darken it; the sky is the bright part, so a Lights mask already contains it.

You already know masks are grayscale and selections become masks (intro, Modules 1 and 4). Luminosity masking is those two ideas fused: a selection derived from the image, saved as a mask. Nothing new to believe, just a smarter source for the stencil.

๐ŸŽš๏ธ Lights, Midtones & Darks

Pros do not stop at one Lights mask. They build a small family of tonal selections and pick the one that matches the job. Think of the full tonal range as a bar from black to white, with overlapping selections living in different regions:

โœ… Narrowing to a band

Need only the brightest highlights (a blown sky, not the whole upper half)? Load Lights, then intersect it with Lights again (Ctrl/โŒ˜ + Shift + Alt/โŒฅ-click the channel). Each intersection keeps only the region both masks share, pushing the selection further into the extreme tones. That is how you target a sky without touching a bright shirt below it.

The fastest source of a Lights mask is the composite RGB channel. Here is the Channels panel, drawn as a diagram, not a live screenshot:

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Guided Build: Rescue the Landscape

Open a high-contrast photo (a bright sky over a darker foreground is ideal). Save as luminosity-working.psd, and work in 16-bit if the file allows โ€” smoother masks, no banding.

Step 1: Diagnose, then load Lights ยท 6 min

  1. Read the histogram. Confirm the highlights are piling up near the right (the bright sky) and shadows near the left (the dark land).
  2. Open the Channels panel and Ctrl/โŒ˜-click the RGB thumbnail. Marching ants appear around the brighter half of the image.

Step 2: Tame the highlights through the mask ยท 8 min

  1. With that selection active, add a Curves adjustment layer. The Lights selection becomes its mask automatically.
  2. Pull the curve down to bring the sky back. Because the mask is the luminance, the darkening fades out naturally before it reaches the land.

โš ๏ธ If it spills onto the land

Your Lights mask was too broad. Undo the layer, reload Lights, then intersect once or twice (Ctrl/โŒ˜ + Shift + Alt/โŒฅ-click RGB) to push the selection into just the brightest tones before adding the adjustment.

Step 3: Lift the shadows through a Darks mask ยท 8 min

  1. Reload the RGB luminosity selection, then invert it (Ctrl/โŒ˜ + Shift + I) so the dark land is now selected.
  2. Add another Curves layer and lift the shadows. The foreground opens up; the already-correct sky is protected because it is black on this mask.

โœ… Why this beats one global Curves

A single S-curve would brighten the sky while it lifts the land, undoing your highlight recovery. Two luminosity-masked curves move highlights and shadows in opposite directions at once. That is a range only masks can reach.

Step 4: Check the edges & finish ยท 6 min

  1. Zoom to 100% along the horizon. A luminosity-masked edit should have no visible seam where sky meets land. If you see a glow, your masks overlap; reduce one layer's opacity or re-intersect.
  2. Optional: a gentle global Curves on top for overall contrast. Save the layered master.

  1. On a portrait or still life, load a Lights mask and add a subtle glow by lifting only the brightest highlights. Notice how it never touches the shadows.
  2. Build a Midtones mask (load Lights, then subtract Darks) and add contrast to only the mids, a classic way to add depth without clipping.
  3. Compare a luminosity-masked sky darken against a hand-painted mask on the same image. The self-feathered edge is the whole point.

Is a luminosity mask the same as the "Blend If" sliders?

They are cousins โ€” both target tones โ€” but Blend If acts per layer at blend time and is instant, while a luminosity mask is an explicit, editable selection you can refine and reuse. You will meet Blend If in Lesson 1.2; often you will use both.

Why load from RGB instead of a single channel?

RGB gives the true perceived luminance. Individual channels (Red, Green, Blue) make great specialized masks โ€” the Blue channel is famous for isolating skies and skin โ€” which is exactly where Lesson 1.2 goes next.

My masks look blocky or banded.

You are almost certainly in 8-bit. Convert to 16-bit (Image โ–ธ Mode) before building luminosity masks; the extra tonal resolution keeps the gradients smooth.
