Module 4 โ€ข Lesson 1๐Ÿ“ Match Perspective, Scale & Lens

A composite lives or dies in the first ten seconds, and it dies on geometry. Before light, before color, an added element has to agree with the scene's horizon, its vanishing points, and the lens the background was shot on. Get those right and the eye stops asking questions.

๐Ÿ‘ค The Goal: It Belongs There

The same figure dropped onto the same ground plane, twice. On the right it ignores the scene: too big, feet off the ground line, facing its own direction. On the left it sits on the perspective grid at the right size, and it instantly reads as there. Drag the handle:

๐Ÿง  Mental Model: Everyone Shares a Horizon

Every photograph has a horizon line at the camera's eye level, whether or not you can see it. It is the height the lens was at. The single most important rule of compositing is that every element must share that one horizon. Two people photographed by cameras held at different heights will never sit together until you put their horizons on the same line.

Find the horizon by extending the receding parallel lines already in the scene โ€” the edges of a road, the tops of a row of windows, a table's sides. Where they converge is a vanishing point, and that point sits on the horizon. Now you know the eye level to match everything else to.

๐Ÿ“ Scale by the Ground, Not the Eye

Beginners scale a pasted person until "it looks about right," and it never does. The reliable method uses the horizon: for people of similar height standing on the same flat ground, the horizon crosses each of them at the same point on their body โ€” usually around the eyes when the camera was at standing eye level. Slide your element along the ground and size it so the horizon still cuts it at that same spot.

โœ… Feet on the ground line

An element's contact point with the ground fixes both its distance and its size. Decide where the feet (or base) touch the floor first, then scale up to the horizon. Getting the contact point right is what kills the "floating sticker" look.

๐Ÿ”Ž Matching the Lens

A wide-angle lens (e.g. 24mm) exaggerates depth and bends verticals near the edges; a long lens (e.g. 200mm) compresses depth and flattens features. Paste a telephoto headshot onto a wide-angle street and the face looks subtly wrong even with perspective matched, because the lens character disagrees.

โš ๏ธ You can't add depth a long lens removed

Warp fixes geometry, not optics. If the lenses are wildly different you are better off finding a better source photo than fighting it. When you can choose your source, shoot or pick elements on a focal length close to the background's.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Guided Build: Place One Element

Open a background with clear perspective (a street, a room) and a cleanly cut-out element from your Module 1 masking work.

Step 1: Find the horizon ยท 8 min

  1. Drag guides along two receding edges in the background and note where they converge. Draw a horizontal guide through that point โ€” your horizon.
  2. If people are already in the scene, confirm the horizon crosses them at eye height. It should.

Step 2: Place and scale ยท 10 min

  1. Bring in the element, set where its feet/base touch the ground. That contact point is now fixed.
  2. Free Transform (hold Shift to keep proportion) until the horizon crosses it at the same body height as the scene's people. It now reads at the right distance and size.

Step 3: Match the perspective ยท 10 min

  1. If the element has its own strong planes (a box, a sign, a building), use Edit โ–ธ Perspective Warp: lay a quad on its face, then bend it toward the scene's vanishing point.
  2. For a person or organic subject, a touch of Free Transform โ–ธ Distort to align the lean is usually enough.

Step 4: Sanity-check the lens ยท 6 min

  1. Step back from the screen. Does the element feel flatter or rounder than its surroundings? If so, a small amount of Lens Correction or a subtle warp can nudge it toward the scene's feel.

๐ŸŒŸ Your challenge

  1. Place the same cut-out person at three distances down one street. If your scaling is right, all three should look like the same person walking away.
  2. Deliberately break it: drop an element with an obviously different horizon (a shot taken from a ladder) and feel exactly why it refuses to sit. Then fix it.
  3. Composite a product onto a table shot on a phone. Phones are wide; watch how much Perspective Warp the box edges need.

Going further: try the Vanishing Point filter (Filter menu) to paste an element that automatically conforms to a plane you define โ€” magic for wall posters and floor graphics.

Do I really need a visible horizon in every photo?

The horizon is always there at eye level even when hidden behind buildings or a hill. You infer it from converging lines. Once you can place that invisible line, you can composite into almost any scene.

My element has no straight edges to warp. How do I match perspective?

Organic subjects (people, trees) mostly need correct scale and eye level rather than plane-warping. Get the ground contact and horizon crossing right and you are 90% there; a slight Distort handles any lean.
