Module 4 โ€ข Lesson 2๐Ÿ’ก Light, Shadows & Reflections

Perspective puts an element in the right place; light makes it real. You match the scene's light direction, quality, and color on the element itself, then anchor it to the world with the shadows and reflections the eye demands before it will believe anything.

๐Ÿ‘ค The Goal: Anchored to the Ground

๐Ÿง  Mental Model: Read the Light First

Before you touch the element, interrogate the background's light. Three questions: Where is it coming from (look at existing shadows โ€” they point away from the source)? How hard is it (crisp shadow edges mean hard, direct sun; soft edges mean an overcast or diffused source)? What color is it (warm afternoon sun, cool shade, a green cast from foliage)?

Whatever you read, the element must obey. If the scene's shadows are soft and fall to the right, your element's own shading and its new shadow must be soft and fall to the right too. A mismatch here is the second most common composite tell after scale.

๐ŸŒ‘ Building a Cast Shadow

A cast shadow is its own layer beneath the element. The reliable build: fill the element's silhouette with black on a new layer, flip/skew it away from the light with Free Transform so it lies on the ground, then blur it more the farther it gets from the object and fade its opacity with distance. Real shadows are crisp and dark where they touch the object and soft and pale where they end.

โš ๏ธ Shadows are colored, not black

Pure black shadows look cut-out. Outdoor shadows lean cool/blue because they are lit by the sky, not the sun. Set the shadow layer slightly blue and pull its opacity back to match the depth of the real shadows already in the scene.

๐Ÿชž Contact Shadows & Reflections

The contact shadow (or ambient occlusion) is the small, dark, barely-blurred smudge exactly where the object meets the ground. It is the single most convincing element in the whole composite โ€” the eye reads it as physical contact. Even when a long cast shadow is subtle, a good contact shadow sells the grounding.

On a glossy floor, water, or a polished table you also owe a reflection: duplicate the element, flip it vertically, align its base to the object's base, drop the opacity, and add a slight vertical blur that increases with distance. Mask it to fade as it recedes.

Always build both a contact shadow and a cast shadow. They do different jobs: the cast shadow tells you where the light is; the contact shadow tells you the object is touching the world. Skip either and something feels subtly wrong even if you can't name it.

Open your placed-element file from Lesson 4.1.

Step 1: Read and match the light ยท 12 min

  1. Note the direction, hardness, and color of the scene's existing shadows.
  2. On the element, add a Dodge & Burn grey layer (Lesson 3.2) clipped to it: brighten the side facing the light, deepen the side away from it, so its shading matches.
  3. Add a clipped Color Balance or Photo Filter to push the element's light color toward the scene's (warm sun, cool shade).

Step 2: Contact shadow ยท 8 min

  1. New layer under the element, Multiply. With a small soft black brush at low flow, darken exactly where the base meets the ground. Keep it tight and only lightly blurred.

Step 3: Cast shadow ยท 12 min

  1. Duplicate the element, fill with black (lock transparency, fill), set Multiply, move below.
  2. Free Transform โ–ธ Distort/Skew it onto the ground, running away from the light. Increase Gaussian Blur toward the far end and mask a gradient so it fades out. Tint it slightly blue.

Step 4: Reflection (if glossy) ยท 8 min

  1. Duplicate the element, Flip Vertical, align bases, lower opacity to ~25โ€“40%, add motion/gaussian blur increasing downward, mask a fade. ๐Ÿ†

๐ŸŒŸ Your challenge

  1. Composite the same object into a hard-sun scene and a soft-overcast scene. Feel how completely the shadow's edge and depth have to change.
  2. Put an object on a puddle or a marble floor and build the reflection. Get the base alignment perfect โ€” a reflection that starts a few pixels off is instantly wrong.
  3. Light one element with a colored source (a neon sign, a sunset) and let that color spill onto its lit edge. Colored rim light is what makes advertising composites sing.

Going further: add a subtle rim light โ€” a thin bright edge where the light wraps the element โ€” on a masked layer. It separates the subject from the background and reads as expensive.

Can't I just use the Drop Shadow layer style?

Layer-style drop shadows sit at a fixed offset and never lie on the ground in perspective, so they read as graphic design, not photography. Build shadows on real layers you can skew and blur. Save Drop Shadow for flat UI work.

How dark should my shadow be?

Match the scene. Sample the darkness of the shadows already in the background and aim for the same, then usually pull back 5โ€“10%. Too dark is the giveaway; real shadows carry bounced light and are rarely pure black.
