This is the least glamorous lesson in the course and quietly the most important. Get your color pipeline right and every grade you make is trustworthy and repeatable. Get it wrong and you are grading on a lie: colors that shift when you export, banding in your skies, prints that look nothing like your screen.

๐ The Goal: Smooth, Trustworthy Color

๐ง Mental Model: A Color Container
Think of every image as color poured into a container with two properties:
- How wide the container is โ the working space (gamut). A wide space like ProPhoto can hold vivid colors sRGB cannot even describe.
- How finely divided it is โ the bit depth. 8-bit gives 256 steps per channel; 16-bit gives over 32,000. More steps means smoother gradients and more room to push before things break.
A number like "R 220" is meaningless without knowing the container. The same 220 is a different real-world color in sRGB than in Adobe RGB. Color management is simply keeping track of the container so a color means the same thing from capture to screen to print.

For quick web edits, sRGB / 8-bit is fine and Photoshop's defaults handle it. The moment you grade hard, print, or work in wide gamut, the container starts to matter. That is why it lives here, at the front of the professional tier.
๐ Which Working Space?
The three common working spaces are nested: each larger one contains every color of the smaller. Bigger is not automatically better; it is a tool you match to the job.

When you output, Convert to Profile (Edit โธ Convert to Profile) remaps the colors to fit the new space and keeps them looking right. Assign Profile just relabels the container and will shift your colors. For web, the last step is almost always "Convert to sRGB."

Step 1: Configure the pipeline ยท 6 min
- Edit โธ Color Settings. Set RGB working space to Adobe RGB (1998) for print-capable work (or sRGB if you are strictly web), CMYK to your printer's profile, and policies to Preserve Embedded Profiles with mismatch warnings on.
- Open your image and confirm its bit depth: Image โธ Mode โธ 16 Bits/Channel for anything you will grade hard.
Step 2: Diagnose from the histogram ยท 8 min
- Open the Histogram (Window โธ Histogram). Before any edit, read it: Is it crammed left (underexposed) or right (overexposed)? Is it clipped at either end (a spike against the wall = lost detail)? Is it narrow (flat, low contrast)?
- Write down, in one sentence, what the image needs. That sentence is your edit plan.
โ Diagnose before you edit
This is the habit that runs through the whole course. Amateurs grab a slider and push; pros read the histogram, name the problem, then reach for the right tool. Thirty seconds of diagnosis saves ten minutes of flailing.
Step 3: Prove the container matters ยท 6 min
- Duplicate a smooth-gradient image. Convert one copy to 8-bit, keep the other 16-bit.
- Apply the same aggressive Curves to both, then a strong brighten. Zoom in: the 8-bit copy bands; the 16-bit stays smooth. Now you have seen why the pipeline is not optional.
Step 4: Export correctly ยท 4 min
- Keep your layered master in the wide space and 16-bit.
- For web: Convert to Profile โธ sRGB, flatten a copy, and export. The color you graded is the color the world sees.

- Take one image and export it two ways: correctly Converted to sRGB, and deliberately with the profile stripped. View both in a browser and note the color shift. That shift is what viewers see when color management is ignored.
- Practice reading five histograms cold: guess the problem, then open the image and check.
- Set up a wide-gamut, 16-bit document template you can start pro work from.
Going further: if you have a calibrated monitor, turn calibration off for a minute and watch your careful grade fall apart. That is why colorists calibrate.

โ Common Questions at This Stage
Should I just edit everything in ProPhoto to be safe?
Only if you commit to 16-bit and understand you will convert down for output. ProPhoto in 8-bit bands badly, and its gamut is so wide that much of it is imaginary color no device shows. For most work, Adobe RGB (print) or sRGB (web) is the pragmatic choice.
